telling the story ~ this is our home (i)
Composition version: yes.
lyrics
this is our home
this is our home
awaken to a dream
of celestial wonder
(this is our home, this is our home)
kneeling by four streams
with a face turned upward
(this is my home, this is my home)
arising from the dust
a living breathing spirit
(this is our home, this is our home)
just the two of us
in nakedness and fearless
(this is our home, this is our home)
this gracious sphere
(truth and beauty)
surrounding me
(truth and beauty)
embracing me
(truth and beauty)
resounding here
(truth and beauty)
every tear
every fear
everything that disappears
these are worlds unknown
this is our home
this is our home
narrative
In the beginning, it was all beautiful. Imagine awaking as a newly created being - awakening into perfect health, with your senses sharp and inundated with stunning beauty. Especially when the first thing that God did after fashioning man and breathing into him the breath of life was to put him in a luxurious garden, appointed with every tree both beautiful and fruitful.
Home doesn't just mean having a place to hang your hat. You need a purpose, a calling. And Adam had that too. God put him over the rest of creation - not as a pillager of nature, as some people slander the Bible. Rather, Adam was a representative of God Himself. And since God had made creation beautiful and productive, it was Adam's calling to nurture the created order the way that God did.
Despite his surroundings that provided so much for him - enjoyment, nourishment, calling - Adam did nonetheless lack something. Unlike the creatures under his care, he lacked a mate. But not for long; God fashioned a woman out of Adam's own side. "Not from his head, lest she dominate him, not from his foot, lest he dominate her, but from his side, that he might love her," as the old saying goes.
Yes, they had it all. No tears, no fears. They had all they needed. They were home.
